Detroit Mayor Dennis W. Archer appointed 17 members to the Tercentenary Exploratory Committee to begin planning for the city's tri-centennial in 2001. Based on the Committee's recommendation, the non-profit Detroit 300, Inc. was formed in 1988, chaired by Edsel B. Ford II, to develop community programs for Detroit's 300th anniversary celebration.
